“Ideas of Life” Photography exhibition
|
Should photography be considered a form of mainstream art, such as sculpture or painting? According to Thai art teacher Tinnakorn Nugul and French teacher Michaël Barthelemy, the answer is a resounding “yes”. And this is the point they will be trying to prove during their exhibition at 9 Art Gallery, Chiangrai (4-30 September). It’s an opinion that they share with many contemporary photographers, who follow in the footsteps of Henri Cartier-Bresson. This famous French photographer, who passed away recently, was the first person to consider photography as an art form.
“Photography is painting with light”, we often hear photographers say. But while the camera may be likened to a paintbrush, and be as easy to manage, light on the other hand is not an easy medium to master. Behind every sculpture, every painting and indeed every photograph is an artist trying to instill emotion, whether it be from the beauty of a place, the purity of a face or the magic of a certain fragment of time.
Through various portraits and landscapes, Tinnakorn (Bachelor of Fine Arts, Chulalongkorn University) and Michaël (French teacher at the Alliance Française, Chiangrai), give us their vision of everyday life, a narrow slice of the beauty that is all around us. Certainly, the exhibition is one of classical photography (aside from a few digital montages), but it tries to draw the onlooker’s attention to the fabulous richness of daily life, to illustrate the things that are there but which we usually take for granted. However, these two friends, whose working relationship began two years ago, do not necessarily share the same points of view, and each takes his inspiration from different sources.
Perhaps you will easily guess which photo belongs to which of the two exhibitors. But you may be surprised. Often, a photo that you might naively attribute to the foreigner turns out to be the work of the Thai, and vive versa….
But we leave no clues here. You will just have to be at the exhibition when it runs, 4-30 September, at 9 Art Gallery, Chiangrai.
